Weekly Digest 8-14 February

God Is An Astronaut's tenth LP, a claustrophobic eerie sound of Emptiness, new garage punk of Death By Unga Bunga that meets arena rock, also death metal with the touches of grind and black metal, and death metal inspired by the classical music; post-black, stoner, grindcore and rarities from No Use For A Name in our Weekly Digest.

Ad Nauseam – Imperative Imperceptible Impulse

Avant-garde deconstructed and newly reassembled death metal from Italy. Ad Nauseam was inspired by classical the composers such as Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Penderetsky, Chelsea, Xenakis and others during his work on "Imperative Imperceptible Impulse". Fans of Imperial Triumphant should enjoy it.

Dayglo Mourning – Dead Star

This trio from Atlanta is not the one that wastes the listener’s time. The guys go straight to what they do best – a homage to the fuzziest, most classic doom metal they can muster!

Death By Unga Bunga – Heavy Male Insecurity

A decent emotional garage punk into which the arena rock guitar solos sometimes burst. Scandinavians know how to come up with something interesting and unusual, and Death By Unga Bunga from Oslo is one more confirmation of that. From the first listening you can feel how radio-friendly the material is, it’s not that big a stretch to imagine this music as a soundtrack to a TV series, for example, yet because of these guitar solos I keep bobbing my head to the tunes!

Emptiness – Vide

It must be the most uncomfortable album of the week (although I'm not sure if a more eerie album may be released this year at all). Starting with the cover, the Misery Pop tag, which perfectly describes this Belgian band’s music, and ending with the fact that all the parts were recorded in the complete isolation (in pre-COVID times!) in a forest hut just on the roof of a town house. Creepy music for which you have to be in a mood, but if you are…

God Is An Astronaut – Ghost Tapes #10

The tenth album by these Irish instrumentalists in almost 20 years on stage. As always, atmospheric, but not as interesting as it used to be.

Narakah – Blast Heaven

As the name of the album suggests, this release will be fast and brutal. Grindcore from Pittsburgh with love to sci-fi, computer games and manga, that may be felt in samples and synth intros. And blastbeats, of course, blastbeats.

Noctambulist – Noctambulist I: Elegieën

Post-black metal from Tilburg, the same place where the Roadburn festival takes place. When one of the most interesting and creative metal festivals takes place in your city, it will definitely have a positive effect on the band's sound.

No Use For A Name – Rarities vol. 2: The Originals.

I still miss Tony Sly. It's been 4 years since the release of No Use For A Name – "Rarities vol. 1: The Covers" and now Fat Wreck Chords release a sequel, No Use For A Name – "Rarities vol.2: The Originals". 15 tracks, rare recordings and unreleased demos from one of the best punk bands on the label.

Skeleton – Ordainment Of Divinity

Texas black metal punks Skeleton really impressed me last July with their debut LP, and they already release a raw and evil EP, promising a second full-length in 2021! Great job and sick rippers are on this cassette demo.

Swampbeast – Seven Evils Spawned of Seven Heads

The trio from Los Angeles released an immensely powerful debut full-length. I really like when death metal is skillfully played with the speed. And if you add a little more of black and grind to the mix, you really get the candy. Groovy high-quality metal, keep it that way.
