Weekly Digest November 1-7

In this week edition we talk about several Halloween specials, estimate new albums by the avant-garde Diablo Swing Orchestra and hard-working Portrayal of Guilt. In addition, we got fresh black metal, seasoned with cavernous death metal and metallic hardcore, and for non-metalheads — great post-punk, bedroom pop and always sad Emma Ruth Rundle. Welcome to our Weekly Digest!

Diablo Swing Orchestra — Swagger & Stroll Down the Rabbit Hole

I won't even try to describe everything that happens in this LP and all genres, subgenres and influences that can be heard in the Diablo Swing Orchestra’s work. The Swedish avant-garde metal project has been around for 18 years and has 4 full-length albums beside this one, also 1 EP, and many performances at major metal festivals. You are welcomed to swagger and stroll down the rabbit hole.

Emma Ruth Rundle — Engine of Hell

Compared to the collaborative albums with Thou or with Chelsea Wolf, Emma Ruth Rundle's new album "Engine of Hell" sounds even more minimalistic, even more personal, darker, sadder and hits right on the feels. Imagine listening to this album in the dark, looking at the candlelight only.

Extinction AD — CCCP

CCCP is Chaos, Collusion, Carnage and Propaganda. Apparently, no one has decomposed this abbreviation so successfully. Extinction AD bring a fresh spin to the metalcore sound by going back to its roots, harking the likes of Biohazard, Forbidden, Arkangel & Sepultura (check the cover of their classic "Propaganda"!)

Gaahls WYRD — The Humming Mountains

Gaahl is known to be inspired by Satan, as well as, of course, the incredibly beautiful Norwegian nature. In their new half-hour EP, Gaahls WYRD develop the sound of esoteric dark metal from their debut "GastiR — Ghosts Invited", slowly captivating listeners before they sink their teeth and drag themselves into the all-consuming abyss.

Hana Vu — Public Storage

Hana Vu plays what could be identified as garage rock, but Hana doesn't play with a band in the garage, she writes songs by herself in the comfort of her own home, so it's better to call it bedroom pop. Therefore, the vibe is a little calmer. Hana's voice is very sensual, the instrumental is interesting, the album is surprisingly fascinating.

Mortiferum — Perserved In Torment

I did not even have time to recover from the super-powerful release by Worm, as the second full-length album by Mortiferum from Olympia, Washington knocked the wind out of me. I've been following this band for a long time and Weekly Digest has already featured Mortiferum with their debut full-length album "Disgorged From Psychotic Depths". On the second LP, these avid guys continue to pile an evil mix of classic American and Finnish death metal with the addition of a large amount of funeral doom.

Portrayal of Guilt — CHRISTFUCKER

The album with the blasphemous title "CHRISTFUCKER" is the third release from the Texas trio Portrayal of Guilt this year. Their "We Are Always Alone" impressed me, the split with Chat Pile proved the versatility of the band once again, and "CHRISTFUCKER" is a control shot in the head.

SeeYouSpaceCowboy — The Romance of Affliction

Well, I already wrote about SeeYouSpaceCowboy this year when their split EP with If I Die First came out. I couldn't say anything good about them then, six months have passed and ... well, it has a right to exist, you see Limp Bizkit releases a new album in 2021 and people care, so why can't a MySpace-core revival have a platform? If you can't wait to get your 2007 back (again) — check this thing.

SPECTRES — Hindsight

The trio from Vancouver, SPECTRES combines coldwave, post-punk, peace punk and death rock in its sound, writes politicized texts, reflecting on the past and future of society. The perfect soundtrack for strolling the foggy streets, drinking coffee, and thinking about where we went wrong.

Halloween special

Limp Bizkit — Still Sucks

Thanks for the honesty in the title of the release, I guess. If you really want, you can, of course, listen to the first 4 tracks right before the ballad starts, but what for?

Outre-Tombe — Abysse Mortifere

Death metal from Quebec in the spirit of Autopsy, Bolt Thrower, Dismember and Entombed.

Ulver — Scary Muzak

Surprising release from the Norwegians. For the fans of Carpenter's soundtracks — that's it!
