Weekly Digest 1-7 March

Top-notch death metal by Baest, anonymous but super-hyped black metal by Koldovstvo and more classic Norwegian black metal by Mork, fuzz doom by Acid Mammoth, two splits – hardcore one featuring Sunami and Gulch, and another – stoner one with Bog Wizard / Dust Lord, re-recorded Terror, an emotional Tigers Jaw, also war metal and black metal punk – all this is in our Weekly Digest.

Acid Mammoth — Caravan

Here comes Acid Mammoth. Once again, the father and the son guitar duo offers a horde of crushing, fuzzy, Iommi riffs to the listener while the mammoth bass tears down everything on its way with the acid hooves. The drums are thundering with the unearthly beats of a harrowing doom while those mesmerizing vocals bewitch you with the words of woe.

Baest — Necro Sapiens

That's how headliners sound. Baest is a hitmaking, well-sounding and masterly played death metal in the spirit of Bloodbath, Dismember and Morbid Angel. The track "Necro Sapiens" is my favorite death metal track this year so far.

Black Knife — Murder Season

METAL PUNK DEATH SQUAD as it should be. I instantly liked this record when I saw its cover – it pictures The Goat in a leather jacket with the chains and the bullet belt, he is licking the knife against the background of the burning church and its parishioners. I knew that I would not be able to pass by and not include this album in the Weekly Digest. Dirty speed / thrash / black without any fancy stuff, pure rock'n'roll.

Bog Wizard/Dust Lord — Four Tales of the Strange

If you are into Bongzilla, Electric Wizard, Buzzoven, Weedeater – blaze it and enjoy this split.

Invultation — Unconquerable Death

Is it appropriate to label the album "war metal" if you can clearly hear the guitars? The question is open to discussion, but Invultation are the masters of the brutal combining of black and death metal, and the battle samples in the "Banners Under The Moon" track truly evoke a desire to die heroically in the battle.

Koldovstvo — Ни царя, ни бога

It is an anonymous black metal project, although some metal detectives seem to have found the author. "Perfect sound", "as if Have A Nice Life had a black metal side project", "I can't stop listening to it" and many other positive comments may be found wherever someone mentions Koldovstvo. The hype is real, I think we will see this album in the top of year lists for many times.

Mork — Katedralen

Following on 2020's "Pesta" EP, Norwegian Mork resumes its ascension to the ranks of the Scandinavian black metal scene with the fifth LP. Nocturno Culto (Darkthrone), Dolk (Kampfar) and Eero Pöyry from Scepticism appeared on the album.

Regional Justice Center — Crime and Punishment

Soon I'll start describing a band with the one word – powerviolence. What’s more to discuss here? There are two kinds of powerviolence - 1) the good one, 2) the one I will not write about. The Regional Justice Center was released by a trusted label, Closed Casket Activities, the same one on which Gatecreeper recently dropped their unexpected EP, the same one that specializes in such tough hardcore sound. The crime will definitely be punished, hard.

Sunami/Gulch — Split 7"

Triple B Records presents the split record of two Californian bands – the fashionable young hardcore / death metal crowd killers Gulch and the beatdown hardcore gangsters Sunami. Four tracks, zero fucks given.

Terror — Trapped In A World

Terror re-recorded selected tracks from the first two albums, giving them a fresher, more punky sound. Also you can check out the collaboration with the frontman of Nails – Todd Jones, who will be responsible for the sound on the next Terror LP as well.

Tigers Jaw — I Won’t Care How You Remember Me

Emo / indie rock band from Scranton, Pennsylvania, which is in the game for 16 years already by the way, has released the sixth studio album on the label with a very emo name Hopeless records. Beautifully played worries.
