Weekly Digest 24-30 May

A great day for fans of more classic forms of metal – a new EP from the legends of American power metal Cirith Ungol, NWOBHM and Motorhead in the album of Heavy Sentence, the Swedish tradition of heavy metal from Tyrann. And the new Perturbator and Portal, black metal in the range: Finnish, Belarusian, and inspired by the Skyrim game; emotional punk and metallic beatdown hardcore in this Weekly Digest!

Cirith Ungol – Half Past Human

Only a year after their powerful comeback with "Forever Black”, American trad metal legends Cirith Ungol present their new EP "Half Past Human". Most reunions usually end up disappointing, but Cirith Ungol proves that they are not here for the money grab, but to deliver sick traditional metal that had put them on pedestal in the 80s.

Departed – Darkness Reigns

Departed take the raw metallic hardcore sound of bands like All Out War and Hatebreed and add some black and death metal in spirit of Behemoth. It’s weird on paper but sounds pretty cool actually.

Heavy Sentence - Bang to Rights

Holy shit, this band slaps! From the punkish cover art that I absolutely love and to the melodic guitar leads, the vocals reminiscent of Motorhead, NWOBHM power and rock’n’roll attitude. Heavy Sentence are amazing, get into them right now! Also the band members play in like gazillions of other cool bands, actually, two musicians are in Wode, that just put out a sick record we mentioned in Weekly Digest just two month ago.

Impaled Nazarene – Eight Headed Serpent

Impale Nazarene are an epitome of Finish black metal, pissed off and edgy. See for yourself: "After seven years, new studio album "Eight Headed Serpent" is finally unleashed upon this pathetic world full of wimps, posers, turn the other cheekers and generally ignorant glue-sniffers with their cancel culture and virtue-signaling. Hitting you like the 666-megaton nuclear bomb, Eight Headed Serpent shows no mercy to anybody!". Well, there is that.

Khandra - All occupied by sole Death

Khandra is a black metal band from Belarus. Evil and aggressive sound, great music video and overall, just pure black metal. Unlike the president of their country, they are here to take no prisoners.

Needles//Pins – s/t

Melodic emotional punk from Vancouver that has some hooks! On the track "A Rather Strained Apologetic" Needles//Pins pay homage to the Cap'n Jazz's "Little League" and the sound of the band also reminds me of Jawbreaker. Something fresh that also feels familiar.

Noctule – Wretched Abyss

Noctule is a new black metal solo project from Serena Cherry (Svalbard). During the UK national lockdown in 2020, Serena decided to write an entire black metal album themed to the RPG computer game Skyrim. Each song is about different dungeons, storylines, and weapons within the award-winning game. She notes: "I have always associated Skyrim with black metal. The snowy mountain settings, the morbid themes, the Norse mythology backbone – it just goes hand in hand for me" .

Portal – Avow

"Avow" is the sixth full-length album from the mysterious influential avant-garde Australian death metal surrealists Portal. Their intricate and unusual sound made them one of the biggest extreme metal bands from Australian and rightfully so. Listening to Portal truly feels like some weird portal might open and the unspeakable horror will be able to penetrate our world.
