Открытость новым музыкальным веяниям, любознательность и немного удачи – вот элементы становления лидера группы Эсбьорна Свенссона как музыканта: ‘Я играю на фортепиано, потому что в нашем доме не было никакого другого инструмента. На самом деле, я бы предпочёл играть на ударных. Например, еще ребенком я сделал себе установку из разного старого барахла и пытался подражать группе «Sweet» в их песне «Ballroom Blitz». Но потом пришел Магнус Острем со своими барабанами, и я решил остаться за клавишами. Мы выросли вместе с Магнусом и играли мы тоже вместе с самого начала. Когда Магнусу подарили его первую ударную установку, он принес ее ко мне домой, и мы начали играть. Мы понятия не имели, как это делается, но это доставляло нам массу удовольствия. Поскольку у нас не было педагога и никто не говорил нам, как играть, мы смогли развивать свою музыку в уникальном направлении.’ Основательное музыкальное образование Эсбьорн впоследствии получил в Стокгольмском университете.
С середины 80-х Свенссон и Острем зарекомендовали себя как многообещающие музыканты на шведской и датской джазовых сценах. Своё первое трио они собрали в 1990 году, однако так и не смогли начать записывать свой первый альбом, пока не встретили контрабасиста Дэна Берглунда. Оба были буквально сражены наповал его оригинальным гармоническим мышлением и мощными творческими идеями. За “Viaticum” e.s.t. удостоились золотой и платиновой наград German Jazz Award, ещё одной шведской Grammy, ко всему прочему группа попала на обложку главного джазового журнала Downbeat в мае 2006-го!
Новый студийный альбом e.s.t. “Tuesday Wonderland”, напрямую связан с “Viaticum”. Идея, заложенная в “Viaticum”, состояла в том, что музыка - это те необходимые припасы, которые человек берёт с собой в свой долгий жизненный путь. “Tuesday Wonderland” – это сам по себе путь, таинственное путешествие, которое открывает новые миры и ведёт вас в Wonderland, Страну Чудес, сотканную из необычной музыки e.s.t. Like so many American players, Sweden's Esbjorn Svensson has backed his share of pop artists but is essentially a jazz improviser at heart. Svensson's enthusiasm for improvisation came through loud and clear on his Dragon dates of the 1990s, one of which was the decent When Everybody Has Gone. Backed by fellow Swedes Dan Berglund (bass) and Magnus Ostrom (drums), Svensson favors the piano trio format and draws on post-bop influences like Chick Corea, Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett on the standard "Stella By Starlight" and originals ranging from the pensive "4 a.m." to the melancholy "Waltz for the Lonely Ones" and the Middle Eastern-influenced "Mohammed Goes to New York." Much of Svensson's work tends to be introspective and impressionistic, but things get surprisingly funky and almost Horace Silver-ish on "Tough Tough." EST Live offers an hour of intense, virtuosic, probing music that recalls at times Bill Evans, at times Chick Corea but above all the ecstatic piano style developed by Keith Jarrett in the 1970s. The Swedish trio of Esbjorn Svensson (piano), Dan Berglund (bass) and Magnus Ostrom (drums) flow freely and naturally from reflective, suspended balladry ("The Day After")" into fierce, combative, high-speed workouts ("Like Wash It or Something") where Svensson combines sustained invention with unerring articulation and relentless swing. Svensson always stresses that he is part of a trio and that the music is entirely a team product; this may be slightly questionable, since his work stands out so clearly from the mix, but Berglund and Ostrom are empathetic partners at every turn, shadowing Svensson's initiatives like a reflex and leading the action when the time comes--witness Berglund's unfussily melodic break on "Say Hello To Mr D (to Mr S)". The album charts the trio's progress around Sweden in 1995 and comes with a bonus 10-minute CD featuring "Dodge The Dodo" from Montreux in 1999. Unlike most E.S.T. albums, "Winter In Venice" starts off in an overall more reflective mood, with gorgeous near classical after hours tunes that remind one more of a Chet Baker or solo Stanley Turrentine session than the ground-breaking post-jazz E.S.T. is so well known for. Even the recording has a more acoustic feel, with Svennson's Thelonious Monkish jazz-groans, Ostrum's hand-played drums and Berglund's stand-up bass slaps more noticeable than on any other album. While 'Calling Home' and 'At Saturday' move a bit, even the up tempo 'Semblance Suite II' has an unusually 'laid-backing', if you will. It's not until more than half-way through the set that the ambiance shifts back to that familiar E.S.T. vibe. 'Semblance Suite IV' heats up in the middle, while '… Crazy Cat' opens the windows to let a tempo-shifting dissonant wind blow through; before 'Damned Back Blues' stomps out any melancholy left in the room. But even 'In The Fall …', 'Second Page' and 'Herkules Jonssons Låt' explore subtleties rarely heard on other E.S.T. albums. Toeing a surprisingly fine line between acoustic-jazz accessibility and electronic-music ingenuity, E.S.T. (Esbjörn Svensson Trio) is a forward-thinking Swedish trio that adds subtle, dark ambient texture (and then some) to the traditional piano-trio format. As with the group's first Columbia release, Somewhere Else Before, there is a nice mix of well-constructed tunes with catchy, often-lilting melodies. The band is at its best when playing slow, contemplative ballads ("Serenade for the Renegade" is a highlight) that have the same kind of romantic leanings as pianist Bill Evans, yet the three occasionally pick up momentum on tunes like "Behind the Yashmak," without ever abandoning the song's lyricism. The trio also does other things to keep it fresh: they bring in some simple folk music balladry, add some classical music complexity, and even touch on the creeping influence of electro rock à la Radiohead. Strange Place for Snow should add a lot of new American voices to the deafening roar that surrounds this band in Europe. - Tad Hendrickson

E.S.T. like to play with expectations, and they begin Tuesday Wonderland as you might assume, with a spare solo piano line hinting at a delicate baroque counterpoint. It's the kind of feather-stroked chamber jazz they've been working for a few years now. But just as you settle in, crushing drums and fuzzed arco bass drop in a groove from the apocalypse. This ominous track, "Fading Maid Preludium," and its second half, "Fading Maid Postludium," frame Tuesday Wonderland, setting in bas-relief an album of careening, intuitive improvisation. E.S.T. are frighteningly varied in their technique and deep in their understanding of jazz lore. You can hear echoes of Keith Jarrett and Ahmad Jamal in pianist Esbjörn Svensson, from whom the trio take their name, but he also embraces a more modern vocabulary, hinting at Cecil Taylor while dancing gospel vamps and dropping rock power-chords. Drummer Magnus Öström can lay down the shuffling brush strokes of "The Goldhearted Miner," pour out a progressive rock fusillade, or do a ballet of polyrhythmic shadings and colors that recall the late Steve McCall. The real chameleon of the group is bassist Dan Berglund. He plays soulful, muscular double bass lines, but he also triggers a synthesizer for both subtle shading and the hellion roar heard on that opening track. E.S.T. remain a group exploring the edges of jazz improvisation, managing to be free and intuitive while also maintaining melodic and rhythmic touchstones. Tracks like "Brewery of Beggars" are multipart journeys shifting from gentle lyricism to electric storms. E.S.T. have evolved from being the most ECM-like band that wasn't on ECM into their own natural and thoroughly modern hybrid. - John Diliberto

A poetically conceived and beautifully recorded album, Layers of Light finds Swedes Landgren and Svensson exploring more of the traditional material which made their previous ACT release, the 1998 Swedish Folk Modern, a special album for anyone interested in the jazz-meets-folk area associated with such stellar names of the old Swedish scene as saxophonist Lars Gullin, pianist Jan Johansson and trumpeter Bengt-Arne Wallin. Although there is the occasional flurry of rhythmic excitement, the accent here is very much upon cool moments of meditative reflection, with Landgren's formidable trombone technique and Svensson's quicksilver pianistics firmly tempered and set in the service of the quietly haunting, minor-hued material. Two affecting originals--one by Svensson, and one by Wallin, whose classic early-1960s Folk Meets Jazz session was reissued by ACT a couple of years ago--increase the measured appeal of an album that would seem to have been recorded in a vast, pine-framed panorama of nurturing silence. --Michael Tucker

Открытость новым музыкальным веяниям, любознательность и немного удачи – вот элементы становления лидера группы Эсбьорна Свенссона как музыканта: ‘Я играю на фортепиано, потому что в нашем доме не было никакого другого инструмента. На самом деле, я бы предпочёл играть на ударных. Например, еще ребенком я сделал себе установку из разного старого барахла и пытался подражать группе «Sweet» в их песне «Ballroom Blitz». Но потом пришел Магнус Острем со своими барабанами, и я решил остаться за клавишами. Мы выросли вместе с Магнусом и играли мы тоже вместе с самого начала. Когда Магнусу подарили его первую ударную установку, он принес ее ко мне домой, и мы начали играть. Мы понятия не имели, как это делается, но это доставляло нам массу удовольствия. Поскольку у нас не было педагога и никто не говорил нам, как играть, мы смогли развивать свою музыку в уникальном направлении.’ Основательное музыкальное образование Эсбьорн впоследствии получил в Стокгольмском университете.
С середины 80-х Свенссон и Острем зарекомендовали себя как многообещающие музыканты на шведской и датской джазовых сценах. Своё первое трио они собрали в 1990 году, однако так и не смогли начать записывать свой первый альбом, пока не встретили контрабасиста Дэна Берглунда. Like so many American players, Sweden's Esbjorn Svensson has backed his share of pop artists but is essentially a jazz improviser at heart. Svensson's enthusiasm for improvisation came through loud and clear on his Dragon dates of the 1990s, one of which was the decent When Everybody Has Gone. Backed by fellow Swedes Dan Berglund (bass) and Magnus Ostrom (drums), Svensson favors the piano trio format and draws on post-bop influences like Chick Corea, Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett on the standard "Stella By Starlight" and originals ranging from the pensive "4 a.m." to the melancholy "Waltz for the Lonely Ones" and the Middle Eastern-influenced "Mohammed Goes to New York." Much of Svensson's work tends to be introspective and impressionistic, but things get surprisingly funky and almost Horace Silver-ish on "Tough Tough." EST Live offers an hour of intense, virtuosic, probing music that recalls at times Bill Evans, at times Chick Corea but above all the ecstatic piano style developed by Keith Jarrett in the 1970s. The Swedish trio of Esbjorn Svensson (piano), Dan Berglund (bass) and Magnus Ostrom (drums) flow freely and naturally from reflective, suspended balladry ("The Day After")" into fierce, combative, high-speed workouts ("Like Wash It or Something") where Svensson combines sustained invention with unerring articulation and relentless swing. Svensson always stresses that he is part of a trio and that the music is entirely a team product; this may be slightly questionable, since his work stands out so clearly from the mix, but Berglund and Ostrom are empathetic partners at every turn, shadowing Svensson's initiatives like a reflex and leading the action when the time comes--witness Berglund's unfussily melodic break on "Say Hello To Mr D (to Mr S)". The album charts the trio's progress around Sweden in 1995 and comes with a bonus 10-minute CD featuring "Dodge The Dodo" from Montreux in 1999. Unlike most E.S.T. albums, "Winter In Venice" starts off in an overall more reflective mood, with gorgeous near classical after hours tunes that remind one more of a Chet Baker or solo Stanley Turrentine session than the ground-breaking post-jazz E.S.T. is so well known for. Even the recording has a more acoustic feel, with Svennson's Thelonious Monkish jazz-groans, Ostrum's hand-played drums and Berglund's stand-up bass slaps more noticeable than on any other album. While 'Calling Home' and 'At Saturday' move a bit, even the up tempo 'Semblance Suite II' has an unusually 'laid-backing', if you will. It's not until more than half-way through the set that the ambiance shifts back to that familiar E.S.T. vibe. 'Semblance Suite IV' heats up in the middle, while '… Crazy Cat' opens the windows to let a tempo-shifting dissonant wind blow through; before 'Damned Back Blues' stomps out any melancholy left in the room. But even 'In The Fall …', 'Second Page' and 'Herkules Jonssons Låt' explore subtleties rarely heard on other E.S.T. albums. Toeing a surprisingly fine line between acoustic-jazz accessibility and electronic-music ingenuity, E.S.T. (Esbjörn Svensson Trio) is a forward-thinking Swedish trio that adds subtle, dark ambient texture (and then some) to the traditional piano-trio format. As with the group's first Columbia release, Somewhere Else Before, there is a nice mix of well-constructed tunes with catchy, often-lilting melodies. The band is at its best when playing slow, contemplative ballads ("Serenade for the Renegade" is a highlight) that have the same kind of romantic leanings as pianist Bill Evans, yet the three occasionally pick up momentum on tunes like "Behind the Yashmak," without ever abandoning the song's lyricism. The trio also does other things to keep it fresh: they bring in some simple folk music balladry, add some classical music complexity, and even touch on the creeping influence of electro rock à la Radiohead. Strange Place for Snow should add a lot of new American voices to the deafening roar that surrounds this band in Europe. - Tad Hendrickson

E.S.T. like to play with expectations, and they begin Tuesday Wonderland as you might assume, with a spare solo piano line hinting at a delicate baroque counterpoint. It's the kind of feather-stroked chamber jazz they've been working for a few years now. But just as you settle in, crushing drums and fuzzed arco bass drop in a groove from the apocalypse. This ominous track, "Fading Maid Preludium," and its second half, "Fading Maid Postludium," frame Tuesday Wonderland, setting in bas-relief an album of careening, intuitive improvisation. E.S.T. are frighteningly varied in their technique and deep in their understanding of jazz lore. You can hear echoes of Keith Jarrett and Ahmad Jamal in pianist Esbjörn Svensson, from whom the trio take their name, but he also embraces a more modern vocabulary, hinting at Cecil Taylor while dancing gospel vamps and dropping rock power-chords. Drummer Magnus Öström can lay down the shuffling brush strokes of "The Goldhearted Miner," pour out a progressive rock fusillade, or do a ballet of polyrhythmic shadings and colors that recall the late Steve McCall. The real chameleon of the group is bassist Dan Berglund. He plays soulful, muscular double bass lines, but he also triggers a synthesizer for both subtle shading and the hellion roar heard on that opening track. E.S.T. remain a group exploring the edges of jazz improvisation, managing to be free and intuitive while also maintaining melodic and rhythmic touchstones. Tracks like "Brewery of Beggars" are multipart journeys shifting from gentle lyricism to electric storms. A poetically conceived and beautifully recorded album, Layers of Light finds Swedes Landgren and Svensson exploring more of the traditional material which made their previous ACT release, the 1998 Swedish Folk Modern, a special album for anyone interested in the jazz-meets-folk area associated with such stellar names of the old Swedish scene as saxophonist Lars Gullin, pianist Jan Johansson and trumpeter Bengt-Arne Wallin. Although there is the occasional flurry of rhythmic excitement, the accent here is very much upon cool moments of meditative reflection, with Landgren's formidable trombone technique and Svensson's quicksilver pianistics firmly tempered and set in the service of the quietly haunting, minor-hued material. Two affecting originals--one by Svensson, and one by Wallin, whose classic early-1960s Folk Meets Jazz session was reissued by ACT a couple of years ago--increase the measured appeal of an album that would seem to have been recorded in a vast, pine-framed panorama of nurturing silence. --Michael Tucker
